As the book's publication date approaches, the campaign manager will begin contacting broadcast media outlets (TV and radio).
Since broadcast media has a very short turn-around time (interviews may happen the same day they are pitched), these outlets are not pitched until the book is on the market, so that if listeners or viewers want to purchase copies, they will be readily available.
The length and topic of radio interviews vary greatly, depending on the target audience and time of day: early morning shows statistically draw the most listeners, but the interviews are often shorter—typically just a couple of minutes; midday programs tend to be geared toward women and interviews are often a bit longer; afternoon/drive time programs are similar to morning shows; and evening programs tend to be more political in nature with substantially longer interviews, lasting up to two hours.
Radio is an excellent way to connect with your audience and spark their attention, which is why preparing for this type of interview is a primary focus of author media training. About 90 percent of all radio interviews are conducted by phone, making them perhaps the most convenient type of interview. Phenix & Phenix will not pursue in-studio interviews unless the author is local or will be visiting the area where the media outlet is located.
